A striking Chinese carpet dominated by the powerful image of the dragon, one of the most important and auspicious symbols in Chinese art. Associated with imperial authority, strength, wisdom and the generative force of nature, the dragon was frequently shown among clouds, waves, mountains or flaming jewels. The substantial room-size format gives the composition an imposing presence, while the graphic treatment of the dragon makes the carpet both a furnishing and an expressive work of textile art. Dragon imagery has a long history in Chinese carpets. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a Qing dynasty Ningxia carpet featuring curvilinear and geometric dragons, along with characteristic fret borders. The comparison demonstrates the motif's historical importance but does not establish a Ningxia attribution for the present carpet.
