A highly decorative square American hooked rug combining the immediacy of folk craftsmanship with the simplified geometry of the Art Deco period. The nearly square format gives the design an unusual sense of symmetry and makes the rug especially suitable for a central seating area, library or intimate dining space. Hooked rugs occupy a distinctive place in American textile history. Produced by pulling narrow strips of wool or fabric through a foundation, they enabled makers to create highly individual designs from familiar, often repurposed materials. This example demonstrates how that domestic tradition absorbed the modern visual language of the early twentieth century.
