A finely woven silk Kashan rug demonstrating the luminous surface and precise drawing associated with luxury Persian workshop weaving. Silk permits exceptionally fine knotting and subtle color transitions, allowing the designer and weaver to execute intricate ornamentation on an intimate scale. As the direction of light changes, the reflective silk surface gives the composition a shifting visual character. Kashan’s workshops were among the most technically accomplished in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Persia. Their finest silk rugs were prestige objects intended to demonstrate the combined talents of the designer, dyer and master weaver.
