A robust antique Bidjar rug from Persian Kurdistan, a weaving center famous for producing some of the most substantial and durable carpets in Persia. Bidjar weavers traditionally compressed the wefts during production, creating a dense, compact foundation capable of supporting closely organized ornament and substantial wool pile. This demanding construction contributed to Bidjar’s historic reputation as the “iron rug of Persia.” The present example combines practical durability with the powerful drawing and saturated visual character sought by collectors of Kurdish and northwest Persian weaving.
