An elegant antique Kashan rug reflecting the disciplined drawing and accomplished workshop weaving for which the city became internationally renowned. Its balanced proportions and classical Persian ornament create a formal composition without appearing rigid. Kashan’s weaving tradition drew upon centuries of Persian court design while adapting those conventions for the sophisticated domestic market of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This example combines decorative versatility with the craftsmanship expected from one of Persia’s principal urban weaving centers.
