This early 20th-century antique Chinese rug presents a classic medallion design of considerable elegance, with openwork vine-scroll patterns, vase motifs spewing intersecting vines replete with leaves and flowers, and secondary medallions within ogival forms created by the vine network. A broad border of flowering vines on deep blue provides rich contrast to the burnt-orange central field, and the arrangement of the vine-scrolls carries a subtle Persian influence within an otherwise characteristically Chinese decorative vocabulary.
