Description
Incorporating aspects of culture, history and religious iconography, this antique Persian textile illustrates a classical nativity scene in a lively, heavily embellished manner. The central field on this antique rug displays a sequential triptych separated by inscribed cartouches. Each scene depicts angelic beings with stylized wings and human figures that have radiant halos and graceful Byzantine-influenced expressions. The impressively detailed embellishments give each figure a unique personality and wardrobe complete with small-scale textile patterns.
These beautifully drawn figures are accompanied by symbolic chalices and placed over a background of exuberant floral sprays. The ecclesiastical theme of the central triptych is countered by comparatively secular borders that contain trees, birds, small-scale flower clusters and a wonderful variety of mounted horsemen and dapper gentlemen charging in separate directions.
Today we highlight a Persian antique textile featuring a classical nativity figured scene, which dates back to the late Nineteenth Century. The central field on this antique piece displays a sequential triptych separated by inscribed cartouches. Each scene depicts angelic beings with stylized wings and human figures that have radiant halos and graceful Byzantine-influenced expressions.
The impressively detailed embellishments give each figure a unique personality and wardrobe complete with small-scale textile patterns. In the border, shepherds and men on horseback point skyward, or extend their hands as if offering gifts. The border is completed by small bird and floral motifs.
This piece, although particularly relevant during this time of year, is a beautiful example of Persian artistry. The colors of this piece, including soft pinks and lavenders, punctuated by dark charcoal grays and browns, offer a sophisticated palette to design around.
