Description
Bessarabia lies at the intersection between western Europe and the orient in what is currently Moldavia. Artwork from the area shows the influence of both western European and oriental cultural influences. This beautiful vintage Romanian flat weave rug is an excellent example dating from around the second quarter of the 20th century.
This striking Bessarabian Kilim rug showcases a subtle degree of folk art beauty, breaking away from traditional esoteric patterns and movements to instead focus on the concrete appearance of definitive forms. Because of the careful arrangement of the foreground elements in this whimsical kilim rug, the construction is relatively straight forward.
A single thin border surrounds the large oversized rug, leading the viewer’s eyes from the diagonally striping red, pink and creamy elements to the massive field of parchment beige within. At the center of the vintage rug, cascading down an invisible vertical line, are several attractively rendered natural shapes and figures. Deer, birds, flowers, goats, houses and all other motifs familiar to quiet village life decorate the Romanian rug’s canvas. The way such motifs are presented conveys an almost familial sense of belonging, which is designed to settle comfortably in any environment to attract attention and establish a cozy atmosphere.
