An exceptionally large Aubusson carpet conceived to organize and furnish a grand European interior. Its extraordinary width—nearly twenty feet—is as notable as its length and gives the carpet an imposing architectural presence. Aubusson carpets were tapestry-woven rather than knotted, allowing their makers to create graceful floral ornament, architectural borders and sophisticated tonal transitions. Comparable Aubusson production is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s European decorative-arts collection.
