Rugs from Kars are unique because this area of Turkey was inhabited by many people throughout the centuries. In its early days, it was occupied by Armenians. It has also been a part of the Seljuk Empire, Ottoman Empire, and Russia for a time. Now, many of the rugs are produced by Kurdish tribes who still inhabit the region. These cultural influences give these rugs a unique character that is influenced by many of the cultures and weaving styles in the region, but these styles have merged into one that is unique to rugs in the area.
