A monumental English needlepoint carpet created through the labor-intensive process of embroidering wool yarn through a canvas foundation. This technique allowed makers to achieve detailed floral and pictorial effects while retaining the tactile presence of a substantial floor covering. Large needlepoint carpets were important elements in British and Anglo-American interiors, where they brought the traditions of fine needlework into an architectural format. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves significant English examples, including an eighteenth-century wool needlepoint carpet.
