A finely woven Hereke rug incorporating silk and metallic thread, materials historically associated with luxury and ceremonial textile production. The reflective metallic details enliven the surface as the light changes, while the compact scale invites close examination of the weaver’s technical control. Founded as an imperial manufacturing center during the Ottoman period, Hereke became synonymous with exceptionally fine workshop carpets. Later examples vary considerably in quality, making the structure, fineness, materials and signature especially important in assessing an individual piece.
