An antique garden design Tabriz rug from circa 1900, this truly spectacular carpet draws on the Safavid courtly tradition of the formal palace garden, with each section of its design featuring trees of deep symbolic resonance — the cypress for serenity and rebirth, the weeping willow, the pear tree, and flowering plants rendered with botanical specificity. Birds sing throughout the field, carrying meanings of fertility and faith, while calligraphic Kufic script appears in the borders between the design's four quadrants. Woven in Tabriz — a center of carpet-making since the Safavid Dynasty — this richly symbolic and meticulously detailed carpet is a rare example of a design type that does not come around often.
