An atmospheric Khotan rug reflecting the cosmopolitan artistic character of East Turkestan’s oasis communities. Positioned along historic trade routes connecting China, Central Asia, India and Persia, Khotan developed a distinctive carpet tradition that combined Chinese-inspired ornament with Central Asian composition and color. The resulting rugs possess a quiet, contemplative quality quite different from the dense ornament of many Persian carpets. Whether organized around pomegranate branches, medallions, or stylized floral devices, their designs embody the cultural exchange of the Silk Road.
