Featuring a design that graces some of the finest mid-century Swedish rugs, this charming example is possessed by a subtle beauty that is enhanced by its muted pallet of yellows. While there is no one design nor one school of design that characterizes a majority of mid-century Scandinavian rugs and carpets, there are nevertheless a handful of certain aesthetic embellishments that are common enough as to represent something of a trend or development. Among these: a proclivity among mid-century Swedish designers to craft rugs and carpets the bear a superficial, structural similarity to classical Oriental rugs and carpets, while maintaining a unique and contemporary Scandinavian sensibility. Here, the simple geometric floral figures that run throughout the perimeter are the only discernible detail elements – the rest is a simple design of a yellow field and a yellow outer border. The simplicity gives this carpet a great versatility, while its commitment to traditional ideals combined with modern sensibilities makes it an exemplary work.
