The neutral tones of this lovely antique rug from the 1920’s make it versatile enough for any room. This lovely antique French art deco rug was created by one of the most influential artists of the early 20th century, Jules Leleu. Some consider Leleu to be the grandfather of the Art Deco movement.
Leleu was primarily known as the sculptor, but he also created designs for carpet maker Ivan Da Silva Bruhns. It was this work that made his designs iconic pieces in Art Deco interior design. This rug is an example of Leleu’s characteristic style that uses geometric shapes, sharp lines, and the tendency to distill shapes to their most basic form, a characteristic that would later become associated with the modern art movements.
The floral designs in this signed antique French rug uses scroll work leaves and flowers, only without the level of detail typically associated with designs of this type. This technique gives it a distinctively minimalist or modern feel. The carpet consists of a border and solid ivory field. The design uses a simple color palette in neutral shades, broken by the occasional burgundy accent. This is another characteristic of Leleu’s designs. Only the most basic shading is used, with much of the design in silhouette only.
The French Art Deco Leleu rug is based on classic designs, yet the technique used by Leleu gives it a distinctly contemporary flavor.
