An exceptionally rare and visually commanding antique Baku carpet, remarkable for its extraordinary size, richly populated design, and powerful geometric character. Measuring approximately 15 feet 9 inches by 11 feet, it is dramatically larger than the great majority of surviving nineteenth-century Caucasian rugs, which were generally woven in much smaller formats. Producing a village carpet of this scale would have required exceptional ambition, careful planning, and a considerably larger loom than was ordinarily used. The expansive field is animated by numerous stylized animals woven among the bold geometric motifs, giving the carpet a vivid narrative quality and an almost archaic personality. These creatures were not intended as naturalistic portraits; rather, they belong to the symbolic visual language of Caucasian weaving, adding movement, individuality, and an engaging sense of discovery throughout the composition. Large-format Caucasian carpets with genuinely tribal geometric drawing are exceptionally scarce, and examples combining this scale with such an abundance of animal imagery are rarer still. With its impressive proportions, lively iconography, and unmistakable village character, this Baku can be compared with the most compelling oversized geometric carpets of the Caucasus.
