Origin: Central Anatolia
Konya region, ca. 1600
This rural type, hitherto undiscovered in western assortments due to its absence in exports during its original creation, has been ascribed to Karapinar since May Beattie unveiled some later instances within the city's mosque. Her renowned article in Oriental Art shed light on this obscure type. The count of early specimens tracing back to the 16th/17th centuries remains notably scarce: a snippet within the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (featuring two medallions); a snippet housed in the Vakiflar Museum, Istanbul (displaying a solitary medallion); a piece documented by Herrmann (showcasing a single medallion, now part of the Wher Collection, exhibited at the institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, in 1989); a fragment within the Wolf Collection, New York (highlighted in Atlantic Collections); and an extensive, seemingly intact carpet boasting three medallions at the Washington Textile Museum (perplexingly dated to the 19th century). In terms of style and the intricacies of field and border designs, the latter example aligns most closely with our artifact (akin to the Vakiflar fragment). This fragment faithfully emulates Ottoman court patterns, although it ingeniously adapts them to a geometric, almost Kilim-esque flair, featuring motifs such as carnations, hyacinths, and pomegranates.
