Antique Turkish Oushak Rug - Circa 1900

Size: 15 ft 6 in x 10 ft 1 in (4.72 m x 3.07 m)

Provenance: Purchased from Sotheby's London

A visually arresting antique Oushak with an unusually strong red field populated by an array of circular medallions and geometric devices. The brilliant coloration and almost tribal arrangement distinguish it from the softer floral Oushaks more commonly encountered. Its generous 15-foot-6-inch length and bold graphic personality make it an exciting statement carpet that energizes both traditional and contemporary surroundings. Yes. The strongest museum comparison is a carpet at The Metropolitan Museum of Art dated 1774. The Met identifies it as a Gördes-type prayer design with a stepped mihrab, columns, and suspended ornament, woven with silk and metal-wrapped silk thread alongside other materials. The Met also holds several eighteenth-century Gördes prayer rugs, but most are woven primarily in wool.

The carpet is in usable overall condition, though the pile is generally low and the field shows several areas of repiling and restoration. The side selvages are in generally good order; one appears to be original, while the other has likely been replaced. One end is largely secure, though a corner would benefit from minor attention. The opposite end is not fully secured and would benefit from restoration to properly close the fringe area.

Along this unsecured end there is also an area measuring approximately 0.8 x 1.6–2 inches where the foundation wefts are exposed and the pile is missing. Additional localized repiling and restored areas are present throughout the field.

Despite these condition issues, the carpet retains strong decorative appeal, a striking color palette, and an impressive overall presence, and could be used with relatively minor conservation attention.
