Large Antique Persian Khorassan Rug

Size: 15 ft x 11 ft 9 in (4.57 m x 3.58 m)

Provenance: From a New York residence

Circa 1900 A grandly scaled antique Khorassan carpet displaying the expansive drawing and fluid Persian ornament associated with northeastern Iran. Its impressive dimensions and softly aged decorative character make it particularly suitable for a large room where it can be appreciated as both an architectural foundation and an accomplished work of textile art.

A very attractive Persian Khorasan carpet with an allover repeating design and no central medallion, set against a particularly appealing light blue field. The ends are in good order.

The carpet shows several notable restorations. In the lower section there are two substantial reconstructed areas, clearly distinguishable by their noticeably lighter coloration; one measures approximately 1.5–2 x 12–14 inches and forms a rectangular patch. Additional restored areas are present throughout the field, including another repair near the lower border and a further restoration in one corner. Scattered smaller restorations are also visible across the field on close inspection.

The pile is generally low throughout. Despite these condition issues, the carpet retains considerable decorative appeal, with a pleasing color palette and an overall attractive appearance. Some of the more visible restorations could potentially be softened visually through careful cosmetic conservation.
