Agra is the traditional home to the Taj Mahal and one of the finest carpet weaving traditions in the world. Agra workshops created carpets known for their fascinating designs and high-quality weaving. This gorgeous burgundy Agra rug is an eye-catching piece for its color and design. It was created in the late 19th century. Agra was established as a carpet weaving center as early as the 16th century when a Mughal Emperor visited Persia and brought the secrets of the trade home.
Traditionally, Agra was established to create carpets for the Indian courts. They were specially designed for palaces, temples, and for the homes of dignitaries. While the overall format of the design is in line with Persian influences, the designs themselves took on a more Indian influence. Throughout this piece, you can see a menagerie of flora and fauna. You can see tigers hunting their prey. You can see rabbits, deer, and a variety of birds if you look closely.
One of the fascinating elements of this piece is that you can see traditional Persian motifs, such as the cypress tree and variations on the willow and hyacinth design along with elephants and Indian flora.
