A richly patterned Caucasian Soumak distinguished by the crisp, tapestry-like definition created by its weft-wrapping technique. Unlike a knotted-pile rug, a Soumak derives its design from colored wefts wrapped around the foundation, producing a firm surface and exceptionally clear geometric ornament. Caucasian Soumaks are admired for their combination of technical ingenuity and vigorous drawing. Their fields often incorporate medallions, stylized animals, birds and protective devices, transforming the surface into a densely organized textile landscape.
