Maraceli rugs are beautiful tribal Caucasian rugs from the Shirvan region and tend to be very similar in design. This gorgeous rug has an all over design pattern and repeating motifs that show the precision and skill of experienced weavers. Its colors are beautiful, and it features a diverse palette. Throughout the Caucasian rug, you can see the centuries of tribal tradition behind it.
The antique rugs from the Caucuses get their name from the area in which they were made. There were over 85 groups of Caucasian tribal rugs, and this one is an excellent example of a Maraceli tribal piece. One thing that makes each of these tribal Maraceli and Caucasian Shirvan rugs unique is that the people only had access to the wool and materials in their local area.
Maraceli rugs have several distinctive features. For instance, they are characterized by the presence of a stylized motif called the boteh. It is the forerunner of the modern paisley design. In many cultures, the boteh is known as the “eternal flame” or “seed of life.” Maraceli rugs have a boteh with a stepped edge that is unique to rugs from this area.
