Antique America Hooked Rug that Was based Off Of A French Aubusson Carpet Design, Country of Origin: America, Circa Date: Late 19th Century – While the technique and somewhat quaint drawing of this outstanding antique hooked rug betray the distinctive charm of American folk art, the medallion-cartouche design and the soft ivory golden coloration are clearly derived from contemporary French Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets. This large antique American Hooked rug clearly represents a desire to produce something more cosmopolitan, formal, and stately than the usual American hooked antique rugs, and this is also evident in the exceptionally large scale or size of the piece. As such it represents a genuinely rare and distinctive example within this genre.
